The Armed Atheist
is the creation of KidKaos.
An active and outspoken atheist and firearms enthusiast.
Searching the web turned up many sites on Atheism. Many
more sites were found on firearms. Still more on the Second
Amendment rights to bear arms. Yet further reading finds that all
too many of those sites seem to say that firearms rights are "God
Given". Atheists seem to have remained somewhat silent on
the issue. Preferring to keep their politics in the realm of the
First Amendments separation of church and state.
But who
is better suited to argue the controversial interpretation of our
second amendment? Those who blindly state the un-provable "God
Given Right" argument, the more rational "Signers
Intent" argument, or the very rational scientific approach
that I feel the Rational Atheist could bring to the discussion.
Here is my approach.
The God Given Right to own a gun is
a fallacy for obvious reasons. We can dismiss this view simply on
the grounds that any statement made without supporting facts can
be dismissed with no supporting facts.
Unfortunately our
founding fathers did not foresee a time in the future where the
wording of their Constitutional Amendments may come into
question. They therefore failed to fully explain for posterity
their exact intent when it came to the peoples rights to bear
arms. What scant evidence they did leave us, often only serves to
confuse the issue further. Although the "Founding Fathers
Intent" argument has merit and must be investigated it
leaves many doors open to personal interpretation.
Where
does that leave us? In my view it leaves us at the door of
rational analysis. Looking at the history behind our Founding
Fathers intent. Looking at the evidence left behind in writings
from them. Looking at the world they lived in as we understand it
today. Then taking that information and bringing it into the
world we live in today. Looking at the realistic environment we
inhabit and investigating the possible solutions to problems
related to firearms ownership, the rights we should retain, what
if any rights should be given up and what if any rights should be
given back.
This rational approach should help to bring a
viewpoint on Constitutional lawmaking based on facts, rational
interpretation and intelligent argument. Given that ultimately
the United States Supreme Court has final say on firearms rights
and the Second Amendment, we must be prepared to present an
argument to this, our highest court, which can withstand the
slings and arrows of religious doctrine, historical conjecture
and unfounded assertions.
Taking a rational approach will
hopefully allow for the atheists to bring to the debate a solid
argument that can be viewed by all concerned as intelligent and
valid. We can and must speak up on all matters of law, government
and public policy or face a future where assumptions, religious
doctrine and personal bias take the decisions about our lives
from us.
